Los Banos Area

Located in Merced County, Los Banos is positioned on the west side San Joaquin Valley, close to the State Route 152 and Interstate 5 junction.  State routes 152 and 165 cross on the southeast side of town.  The Los Banos municipal Airport serves the central California city.

The name comes from the Spanish word los baños , which means “the baths”- a name given to it due to the spring that channels water to the San Juaquin Valley wetlands that sustain the wildlife habitat; located just northeast of Los Banos.  Several wildlife environments are located in the region including the Kesterson Unit, East Bear Creek, West Bear Creek and the Blue Goose Unit; all located within the San Luis National Wildlife Refuge, which itself is located within a larger complex of preservation lands such as the Merced National Wildlife Refuge and the San Joaquin River National Wildlife Refuge.   As one can imagine, Los Banos is a popular destination for sightseeing, fishing, and hunting.

The Los Banos area was originally settled in the 1840’s as part of Mexico.  The first white settler arrived 19 years later in 1859.  It became a trading post town, located west of present day Los Banos, but repositioned east after the arrival of the railroads.  There were often strategic schemes used by residents to secure rights to land and water.  In one such case, Uriah Wood paid off the ferryman to hold the boat on the east side of the river to gain ground on Henry Miller - a competing resident looking to acquire the same real estate.  In doing so, Wood not only acquired the land, but it cost him a mere 45 cents an acre.  That didn’t stop Miller from moving on to become the largest land owner in the United States whom the downtown Miller Plaza is named after.

Los Banos has a large population of Portugese and Spanish immigrants who’s cultures are mirrored in the local businesses, festivals, and parades.
